I am Cheroney Pelupessy, a creator and dancer whose practice combines personal experience, cultural roots, and social responsibility. Drawing on my Indonesian, Moluccan, and Dutch background, I explore how heritage, identity, and collective memory can be physically translated into a contemporary language of movement.
My work begins with myself, my body, and my own history, but it is never solely personal: it is about sharing stories that often remain untold, making communities visible, and creating space for dialogue and reflection. For me, dance is a means of embodying history, reinterpreting traditions, and making cultural layers tangible to a wide audience. I explore how tradition and innovation can coexist and how heritage can be passed on in a careful, respectful, and at the same time contemporary way. My method combines intensive physical exploration with observation and reflection, so that my movement language is both authentic and innovative.
My practice is characterized by depth, precision, and a clear vision: the development of my own hybrid dance language. My work gives rise to encounters and projects that connect generations and contribute to broader cultural and social awareness. I see it as my responsibility to continue and deepen this work, thereby making an active contribution to cultural dialogue in the Netherlands and beyond.
