About changeMakers

How do dance makers in the Netherlands, with roots in Indonesia and the former Dutch East Indies, incorporate their multi-cultural backgrounds? What influence does that have on Dutch dance? And what can their stories contribute to a broader conversation about history and cultural heritage?

The new dansMuseum exhibition, changeMakers, brings together five Netherlands-based dance makers to explore these questions.

Throughout the exhibition the makers will share excerpts from their creative processes in this online exhibition space, providing insight into how their unique multi-cultural experiences influence their evolving work.

In addition to the makers, the exhibition is supported by a panel of seven representatives from the Indo/Indonesian community, as well as two context research associates to provide the exhibition a socio-cultural and dance history perspective. The exhibition can be found online from November 2025 to October 2026 and will conclude with a live presentation during the 2026 festival.

Like previous dansMuseum exhibitions, changeMakers aims to expand an understanding of what constitutes Dutch dance by highlighting the contributions of different cultural groups to its development.
