After the meeting with ND changeMakers, I started having more conversations with my friends about identity, reflecting on migration in the Netherlands, especially through the lens of (Indos) migrating to the Netherlands. These were the subjects we talked about:

  • Blackness in relation to Indo’s moving to the Netherlands in the 1960s
  • Whiteness, and whitepassing as a survival skill
  • Second- and third-generation Indos and their racial ambiguity
  • Were your grandparents sellouts, raped, or erased, or do they never talk about it at home?
  • Can we embrace both sides of the coin if the coin is lying on the floor, pressed down on one side?
  • The relevance and necessity of talking about it
  • Do you feel it?
  • Is this how white people would feel if they actually had to talk about it from all perspectives, without suppressing shame
  • Did you think about it when you made a biracial child?
  • Opacity
