Liminal Space

A liminal space is a threshold, representing an in-between where one's past self meets a future one, making it a space for reflection.

I'm on my way again... can't get going... easily distracted... head full of cotton wool...

A liminal space is often associated with transformation, change, and growth. It is a state in which someone detaches themselves from their old identity or beliefs, but has not yet fully transitioned to a new phase.

I regularly find myself in these liminal phases. Now again: this week, Bart and I are completing a research project at the Academy of Theater and Dance.‍

From our archives:

Two photos of the Lola Bae breeding ground in Amsterdam Southeast, taken in the summer of 2020. For two months, we set up our studio there, surrounded by video tapes and sets from the past 20 years. We rehearsed there for our latest performance, Asian Celebration. During open house sessions, we told stories and organized dance encounters between old and new performers and dancers.

Here is also a sketch of the setup for the closing ceremony on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the Academy of Theater and Dance. We surround ourselves again with photos and scenery from Asian Celebration, performing excerpts from it. We exchange a lot. In Asian Celebration, we looked at the family stories of a number of Asian dancers, and the biological families of these dancers were photographed by visual artist Michiel Voet.

Sonja Bloem plays an important role in our work and also in this presentation.
